I think when
people go into medicine there's a natural segue to wanting to help the
less fortunate, but who ever enters electrical engineering with saving
the world on their minds? I never thought that the passion God put in
my heart would be at all useful in God's mission but as it turns out,
technical services are really needed. I went into engineering because I
truly love it. This love has been turned up to eleven in Africa and
honestly I can't believe how much fun I have doing it.
I had the
pleasure of working with another electrical engineer for a month and
learned a ton about power. This is Hannah and I working on the hospital generator!
I'm now teaching the 10 electricians we have
on staff a few hours a day on ways to improve the hospital complex. Just
to clarify, this hospital is going through explosive growth. They have
been building continuously for years now and technologies most of the
rest of Africa have never seen before are being developed and deployed
on a regular basis: electronic medical records, CT scanners, linear
accelerators, hydro electric power, 156 buildings covered with Wi-Fi...
As you can imagine even ten electricians is not enough to keep up with
the dreams that are being realized here. I love the fact that this
place can be a great hope for so many really sick people. I love how we
get to share the gospel with people both through caring for their
physical needs but also through the countless opportunities that arise.
While probably most of what I do on its own isn't going to radically
change the world, being part of God's larger picture is really
fulfilling.
Just a few updates for those playing along at home: my
main sustainable internet project is nearly complete and I hope to
launch that worldwide in the next few months. Pray it can be used to
bring educational resources to new places worldwide through a
sustainable model. Our IT department is going through some massive
personnel changes. Pray the newcomers can hold the fort down. Charlie
will start school for the first time in a month. Pray School of Mom is a
tenth as exciting as Charlie thinks it is going to be. We head back to
Banyo in 2 months. Pray for safe, nausea free travels. Pray for our
friends who are trapped in a rough physical life and without the hope of
Jesus.

I love hearing about your and Lori's work and little Charlie. Am praying as always for your requests.
ReplyDeleteTo know you are part of God' larger picture brings joy to a mother's heart! I now see with all those wires how your delayed Christmas present will be of great use to you. And yes, lots of prayer for Charlie's home schooling. I'm sure there will be field trips on electrical engineering with daddy and medical visits with mommy! We sure miss you all!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome Josh!! Thanks so much for sharing! Missing the Shinars!
